Dr. Silke Appel-Cresswell Shares Research on Correlation of Dietary Habits and Onset of PD

Dr. Silke Appel-Cresswell, who holds the Marg Meikle Professorship in Parkinson’s Research, recently published research on the potentially major benefit of diet on brain health, funded mainly by Pacific Parkinson's Research Institute.

The study examined the Mediterranean‐DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, previously linked with prevention of Alzheimer’s disease but not fully assessed in the context of Parkinson’s disease. This cross‐sectional study examined the relationship between MIND diet adherence and the age of PD onset in a Canadian cohort. Dr. Appel-Cresswell and colleagues found a strong correlation between age of onset of PD and dietary habits, suggesting that nutritional strategies may be an effective tool to delay PD onset.
